Leftover Salmon delivered a three-night New Year’s Eve run at the Bay Area’s Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California last weekend. The jamgrass pioneers’ rang in the New Year with a concert that saw the band welcoming singer-songwriters Maria Muldaur and Matt Axton.

LoS got the concert underway with the staple “Down In The Hollow” followed by “Sing Up To The Moon,” “Show Me Something Higher,” “Dance On Your Head,” “Midnight Blues” and “Morning Sun.” Salmon then brought out renowned singer-songwriter, Mill Valley resident and opener Maria Muldaur beginning with her song “I’m Vaccinated & I’m Ready For Love.”

Maria would stick around for the rest of the first set, leading LoS through her “Let’s Get Happy Together” and “Richland Woman Blues” along with a cover of Dolly Parton’s “My Tennessee Mountain Home.” The set came to a close with the jazz standard “Don’t You Feel My Leg (Don’t You Get Me High)” by Blue Lu Barker, Danny Barker and J. Mayo Williams.

Leftover Salmon filled their second set with choice covers but kicked off the set with original “Mama Boulet.” John Hartford’s “Steam Powered Aereo Plane” and Bob Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate” followed. The second frame saw LoS welcoming singer-songwriter Matt Axton to perform “Never Been To Spain,” written and first recorded by his father Hoyt Axton in 1971 and later covered by Three Dog Night. After Axton departed, Maria returned for Gus Cannon’s “Stealin’” ahead of the New Year’s countdown and “Auld Lang Syne.” Muldaur then fronted the band on a timely version of her 1973 hit song, “Midnight At The Oasis.”

LoS then went it alone for a number of great covers to close the set including two songs from the Grateful Dead catalog, “Black Peter” and “Morning Dew,” along with set-closer, John Hartford’s “Up on the Hill Where They Do the Boogie.” LoS returned to encore with the title track from their 1997 album, Euphoria.
