will issue their new album Contraband Love via Red House Records on September 15. “Hit & Run Driver,” the LP’s lead single, has been shared in advance of the record’s release from the husband/wife duo.

The 11-track Contraband Love is mostly made up of new and original songs Campbell wrote and produced. The follow-up to their 2015 self-titled debut includes guests contributions from Little Feat’s Bill Payne and The Lumineers’ Byron Isaacs. The album also features the late great Levon Helm on what was one of his final recordings, playing drums on Carl Perkins’ “Turn Around.”

“I wanted this record to be a progression, bigger than the first one,” Campbell said in a statement. “That’s all I knew. I wanted the songwriting to be deeper, the arrangements more interesting, the performances more dynamic. Specifically how to get there, I didn’t know. I did know the songs were different. The subject matter was darker than anything else I’ve written.”

“More painful!” Williams added.

“Yeah, I’m proud of our debut, but I felt like the songs were lighter than what I’m capable of doing.” Campbell further stated. “As a songwriter, I aspire to a sense of uniqueness: this is a great song and it could only have been written by me. I want to get there. It’s a journey, a goal, a pursuit. The mechanics of that pursuit are figuring out what you need to do to surpass your last body of work.”
