Lake Street Dive will release their ninth album, What About Flamingos?, on February 19, 2027 through their own Dive Not Drive Records. The quintet previewed the 12-track collection with its title song and an accompanying video.
For their first release on their own label, Lake Street Dive set out to capture the interplay of their concerts by recording live together in the studio. The approach originated with vocalist Rachael Price, who wanted to sing alongside her bandmates as they recorded rather than add her vocals afterward.
“When we set out to record this album, our focus was simple: to play live in a room together—human and alive and perfect in its imperfection,” says Lake Street Dive. “We arrived without knowing what songs the others had been writing, with an open invitation to bring anything to the session. Each of us brought our own stories, loves, losses, and philosophies.”
The band split the sessions between two producers and two coasts. Philip Weinrobe worked with Lake Street Dive at Spillway Sounds in West Hurley, New York, while Jonathan Wilson produced sessions at his Five Star Studios in Topanga Canyon, California.
What About Flamingos? follows 2024’s Good Together and includes “You’re Never Around,” which arrived in July. Lake Street Dive debuted that song during their April tour alongside other material earmarked for the new album. Huntertones guest on the forthcoming LP’s “Gertrude.”
Bassist Bridget Kearney wrote “What About Flamingos?” after hearing a podcast interview in which Brian Eno discussed the extraordinary nature of life on Earth. The song considers the wonders that can slip by unnoticed, an idea that also helped shape the album.
“This gratitude for what we have, and the magic of being alive infuses the entire album,” Kearney explained. “In a stream of consciousness, the first thing that came to mind was, what about flamingos.”
“What About Flamingos?” finds Lake Street Dive slowing things down for a pensive turn, with the band’s vocal harmonies providing a particular draw. The track trades their familiar burst of energy for a quieter warmth that lingers after the song ends.
