Lady Gaga performed a record-breaking concert in front of an estimated 2.5 million people on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The free performance set a new record for the highest-attended concert by a female musician.

The historic event was part of Lady Gaga’s recently launched The MAYHEM Ball Tour. Gaga recently headlined Coachella and played before large crowds in Mexico City. The tour stops next in Singapore at the end of this month.

As reported by Variety and others, Madonna set the record broken by Lady Gaga when the former performed in front of a crowd of 1.6 million on Copacabana Beach in 2024. Prior to The MAYHEM Ball Tour stop, Lady Gaga’s last concert in Rio was in 2012.

The concert in Rio featured most of the songs making up the tracklist to Lady Gaga’s recently released album, Mayhem, including the popular single “Abracadabra.” Those were played alongside other songs from throughout the singer-songwriter’s career, favorites “Poker Face,” “Born This Way,” “Shallow” and “Bad Romance” among them.

Brazilian police arrested two suspects for allegedly plotting to bomb Lady Gaga’s concert in Rio. Gaga’s team issued a statement about the incident.

“We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning,” a spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. “Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks. Her team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.”

After appearing before the massive crowd of 2.5 million people, Gaga wrote about the experience, posting the message below on social media:

“Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show — the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you.

“An estimated 2.5 million people came to see me sing, the biggest crowd for any woman in history. I wish I could share this feeling with the whole world — I know I can’t, but I can say this — if you lose your way, you can find your way back if you believe in yourself and work hard. You can give yourself dignity by rehearsing your passion and your craft, pushing yourself to new heights — you can lift yourself up even if it takes some time.

“Thank you Rio for waiting for me to come back. Thank you little monsters all over the world. I love you. I will never forget this moment. Paws up little monsters. Obrigada. Love, Mother Monster.”

The MAYHEM Ball Tour North American leg kicks off with a three-night stand in Las Vegas on July 16, 18 and 19 at T-Mobile Arena, followed visits to San Francisco and Los Angeles. The MAYHEM Ball Tour’s North American leg continues into September with stops in Seattle, New York City, Miami, Toronto and Chicago.
