Aussie rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will release their 17th studio album, L.W., next Friday, February 26. The band previewed the nine-track LP with the video for “Pleura,” which was played live and filmed earlier today in Melbourne.

L.W. serves as a companion to King Giz’s November 2020 studio album, K.G.. Additionally, the LP is the third volume in the group’s exploration of microtonal tunings following 2017’s Flying Microtonal Banana and K.G.. The band previously shared L.W. singles “O.N.E.” and “If Not Now, Then When?”

“We wanted to make new music that was somehow more colorful this time around, and which maybe reflected the many new things that we have learned along the way,” frontman Stu Mackenzie explained. “After recording Flying Microtonal Banana the songs expanded when we played them live, so we felt ready to tackle the microtonal landscape again. Making these two new records was not expected, but because they were recorded in a way that was new to us – not being in the room at the same time – there was a feeling of almost being over-prepared, which is definitely not normal for us. Whatever normal is.”

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard assembled on Thursday morning to record the “Pleura” video. The ever-prolific band turned around the visual, directed by John Angus Stewart within 24 hours. Stu handled recording and mixing duties for a track Max Coles produced. Mackenzie previously told fans not to expect a new King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard album in February when “O.N.E.” was released, yet here we are.

“I think a true document of live music shouldn’t rely entirely on editing,” said John Angus Stewart. “There is something that happens with the way we perceive images, if something “live” is too produced, your mind sort of loses interest. With this format, we wanted to leave the editing up to the viewer. The decision of who to look at, and at what time determines each individual viewing experience. With each watch your experience will be completely different, which mirrors Gizzard’s experience playing the song live. The process is the same, yet the result is different.”
