King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are back in Australia following landmark North American and European tours earlier this year. The Melbourne-based band has recently been in the Sydney area, offering two Phantom Island orchestra concerts at the iconic Sydney Opera House.

The past two evenings the band moved to the intimate Enmore Theatre for rock shows. Friday’s concert saw the band welcoming members of frequent tourmates and collaborators King Stingray.

King Gizzard launched the show with a run of heavy numbers beginning with the doom metal “Superbug” off 2019’s Infest the Rats’ Nest. PetroDragonic Apocalypse thrasher “Supercell” followed before a return to Rats’ Nest with “Self-Immolate,” which boasted a drum solo from Michael Cavanagh, and “Hell.” Gizz then fit “Motor Spirit” within “Gaia.”

The band then cooled things down as guitarist Joey Walker led the way through “Work This Time.” Cavs shined once again on “Le Risque” off the band’s 2024 LP, Flight b741. It appeared Gizz intended to play b741‘s “Hog Calling Contest” next. However, guitarist Stu Mackenzie noted “this song is not called Hog Calling Contest.” Nevertheless, Stu invited audio tech Joe Santarpia to do the hog calling noises. He declined.

Instead, the band lit into “Hot Water,” featuring guitarist Stu on flute. Gizz then embarked on a crowd-pleasing Murder of the Universe suite: “Han-Tyumi, The Confused Cyborg,” “Soy-Protein Munt Machine,” “Vomit Coffin,” and “Murder of the Universe.”

KGLW then switched into microtonal mode beginning with “O.N.E.” Next, Ambrose Kenny Smith delivered his excellent song “Straws in the Wind.” Joey then stepped into the spotlight for “Intrasport.” Following a similar collaboration at the band’s inaugural Field of Vision festival earlier this year, King Gizzard welcomed King Stingray members Dimathaya Burarrwanga and Ngalakan “Billy” Wanambi to add yiḏaki (didgeridoo) to the favorite “Rattlesnake.”
