Announced just five days prior, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard delivered a Rave Set at Fed Square in the band’s hometown of Melbourne, Australia on Friday. KGLW premiered two new songs and also offered live debuts of two songs from their 2021 album Butterfly 3000.
King Gizzard’s Melbourne show on Friday marked the band’s first in Naarm — the Wurundjeri people’s traditional place name for Melbourne — in nearly three years, as per KGLW.net. The concert also marked the band’s first since their inaugural Field of Vision Festival in Colorado.
“Hometown shows, always the fuckin’ scariest one but you guys came out so we’re gonna try and have a real good time,” King Gizzard’s Joey Walker said ahead of the performance. “We’re just gonna party, so join us.”
“Thanks for following us on all our weird adventures all the time,” Stu Mackenzie added.
With drummer Michael Cavanagh back on the kit, the rest of the band gathered around their synth table, which they’ve named Nathan, to kick off the Rave Set with the title track off their October 2023 album, The Silver Cord. Leaving the song unfinished, the band headed into their electronic arrangement of “Kepler-22b,” originally appearing on one of five LPs the band released in 2022, Omnium Gatherum, which saw Ambrose Kenny-Smith raging the congas.
Gizz then returned to The Silver Cord with “Gilgamesh” and “Set,” with the latter featuring Amby on sax. Next, the band unveiled two new songs, “JOJAM” and “2.02 Killer Year.” Those performances were followed by live debuts of Butterfly 3000 cuts “Blue Morpho” and the title track, split by The Silver Cord’s “Extinction,” which saw Joey on guitar.
The Rave Set came to a close with “The Grim Reaper.” Led by Kenny-Smith, the hip-hop-heavy Omnium Gatherum track saw Amby working in lyrics to what appears to be another new song, “Black Market Bargain,” among other quotes.
