Singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun‘s childhood best friend Casey died of an overdose when the inseperable pair were young. Out today from Oladokun is the emotional new single “questions, chaos & faith,” which Joy wrote as a tribute to Casey.

Joy Oladokun was studying at bible college at the time Casey died and struggled with the response she received as she was grieving. “Compassionate as Christians are,” Oladokun told an audience in London in February about the situation as per The Independent, “they told me that ‘your friend who just died, she’s going to hell’. Isn’t that sick? What broke my brain was that if heaven exists, Casey has to be there.”

Oladokun originally previewed the song with an Instagram Reel in January that went viral and led fans to yearn for an official release. The Nashville-based artist debuted “questions, chaos & faith” live earlier this year during her headlining tour of Europe and the UK. Now, Joy Olakodun has shared the heartfelt ode to Casey featuring frank and touching lyrics along with an accompanying video.

The video finds Oladokun strumming the tribute to Casey on acoustic guitar in an outdoor setting as stark as the song. Joy is backed by strings and a choir on the official version yet the visual focuses directly on her. “Nothing is certain, everything changes,” she sings before embracing the reality, “There are no answers, only questions, chaos, and faith.”

The new single comes on the heels of Oladokun’s excellent 2023 album, Proof of Life. Joy Oladokun will mix festival slots, gigs opening for Hozier and shows of her own in the months to come.
