On-the-rise singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun recorded a cover of Bonnie Raitt‘s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” with guitarist Jason Isbell for her new Spotify Singles session. Oladokun’s two-song set also includes a reimagined version of her original hit “Sunday.”

Oladokun recorded her Spotify Singles at Nashville’s Soundstage. Isbell joined in the sessions to add a blazing guitar solo to a song Raitt originally recorded for her commercial smash breakthrough 1991 LP, Luck Of The Draw. Joy initially released the original “sunday” as a single in 2019 and included the song on both 2020’s in defense of my own happiness and her revised version of the LP of the same name that marked Joy’s major label debut.

“I’ve been a rabid consumer of Spotify Singles since their inception. Being asked to do one was a dream come true and I wanted to bring in the best crew,” Oladokun explained. “I asked Jason Isbell to play guitar on the Bonnie Raitt cover and he absolutely smashed the energy and emotion of what I was trying to do. So excited to have these out in the world.”

Joy opens the penultimate show of Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit’s Ryman Auditorium residency in Nashville this Saturday, October 23. Oladokun recently confirmed an extensive 2022 Spring Tour.
