Josh Freese marked the first anniversary of his taking over the drum seat in Foo Fighters by honoring Taylor Hawkins, the man he replaced.

Freese was revealed as the band’s new drummer during the “Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts” livestream event that premiered on May 21, 2023. Foo Fighters’ return came over a year after Taylor Hawkins tragically died on March 25, 2022 at age 50.

“A year ago today this aired and I got to stop keeping quiet about what had been referred to as ‘the worst kept secret in the music business’ at the time (though I thought we did a pretty good job on our end),” Freese began his Instagram post. “Foo Fighters released an hour long special of us playing some songs at rehearsal.”

Josh Freese shared clips of “All My Life,” the first song he played with Foo Fighters featured in the livestream. Freese then wrote about Hawkins. “I continue to miss Taylor as does the band, his family, friends and the rest of the world,” the drummer noted. “We also continue to try and make the most of the situation by moving forward and doing what we love doing….playing music, honoring Taylor and staying positive.”
