John Mayer was joined by special guest Maren Morris last night during his Sob Rock Tour stop in Nashville. Morris helped the guitarist kick off his show at Bridgestone Arena with “Last Train Home” and returned for “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room” towards the end of Wednesday’s concert.
Maren Morris and John Mayer previously teamed up at the 2021 Grammy Awards Ceremony when the guitarist added to the singer-songwriter’s “The Bones” performance. Mayer emerged with his full band as well as Morris on vocals last night to open with Sob Rock standout “Last Train Home.”
The Maren Morris guest spot wasn’t the only surprise John Mayer had in store for Nashville fans. Last night’s seven-song full band opening sequence was followed by an acoustic segment that featured a pair of bust outs. Mayer was accompanied by his band’s backup singers, Tiffany Palmer and Carlos Ricketts, for a partial cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” to begin the unplugged portion of the evening. The guitarist’s first “Can’t Find My Way Home” since September 19, 2014 as per Setlist.FM led into “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967” off 2012’s Born And Raised.
Mayer went on to shock the crowd with “Hotel Bathroom Song,” a tune he wrote … in a hotel bathroom and only performed once prior on March 1, 2010 in Milwaukee. Next came the guitarist’s debut solo acoustic take on Sob Rock’s “Shouldn’t Matter But It Does” and a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’.”
The full band returned after “Free Fallin'” for eight songs to end the main set. “Moving On And Getting Over” gave way to the classic “Your Body Is A Wonderland.” From there, Mayer fit a bit of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Homeward Bound” into “Stop This Train.” The ensuing “Edge Of Desire” was followed by guitarist David Ryan Harris stepping into the spotlight for a snippet of Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones.”
Mayer brought Morris back to the stage after “The Beautiful Ones” for the Continuum gem “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room.” John and Maren dueted on the tune in trading verses. “My high school self just died,” Morris exclaimed following the guest spot. The guitarist then closed out last night’s main set with the pairing of “Wild Blue” and “Gravity.” For the encore, Mayer said farewell to Nashville with fan favorite “Dear Marie” and Sob Rock’s “New Light.”
