One month ago today, John McLaughlin and Jimmy Herring concluded their The Meeting Of The Spirits Tour with a concert at Royce Hall in Los Angeles. The evening, which would be the final U.S. performance by McLaughlin, ended with one more collaboration between the two talented guitarists as Herring joined during the encore performances of the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s “You Know You Know” and “Be Happy.”

The long-in-the-making tour saw Herring opening the concerts with his band The Invisible Whip made up of drummer Jeff Sipe, keyboardists Matt Slocum and Jason Crosby and bassist Kevin Scott. Their set was followed by a set by McLaughlin and The 4th Dimension that includes multi-instrumentalist Gary Husband, drummer Ranjit Barot and bassist Etienne M’Bappé, who relied mostly on selections from the Mahavishnu Orchestra catalog.

Below is footage of the December 9 encore in L.A. featuring Herring joining McLaughlin for the latter’s final songs on U.S. soil captured by Cal Vid. Watch the audience-shot video here:
