The Allman Brothers Band’s summer tour visited the group’s home state of Georgia last night for a Labor Day performance at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park in Alpharetta. Fellow JamBase favorites Grace Potter & The Nocturnals opened Monday’s show, the first of four gigs the bands will play together this week.

The Allmans kicked off their set with live staples “Statesboro Blues” and “Midnight Rider” and then offered a cover of Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters.” Also included in the group’s main set was a cover of “Rain” by The Beatles, one of the band’s newer songs -“Dusk Till Dawn” -and a version of “Melissa” featuring Gregg Allman on acoustic guitar backed by Warren Haynes, Oteil Burbridge and Butch Trucks. Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring emerged towards the middle of the set to help out on ABB classic “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.” Herring was briefly a member of the Allman Brothers Band in 2000. For the encore, the Allmans brought out blues-rocker Tinsley Ellis on guitar for a take on “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” before ending the evening with a guest-less “Whipping Post.”
