The next installment of the Jerry Garcia GarciaLive archival series features a show from 1989 performed with special guest Clarence Clemons. GarciaLive Volume 13: September 16th, 1989 Poplar Creek Music Theatre is due on April 24 via Round Records.

Recorded live at the Chicago area venue the Poplar Creek Music Theatre, which has since been demolished, the JGB lineup featured Garcia, keyboardist Melvin Seals, drummer David Kemper, bassist John Kahn and backing vocalists Gloria Jones and Jackie LaBranch. Clemons sat-in throughout the night as he did for a series of five Jerry Garcia Band gigs that started at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey and ended at Poplar Creek. The longtime Bruce Springsteen sideman was on hiatus with the rest of the E Street Band at the time.

Celebrate what would have been Clarence Clemons’ 80th birthday by watching him sit-in with the Jerry Garcia Band for a full show in 1989.

“Much of the JGB’s material was steeped in R&B, gospel, and rock & roll — more in the relatively straight-ahead Springsteen mold than so many of the Dead’s more complex, open-ended, and stylistically difficult-to-categorize explorations, which were often hard for ‘outsiders’ to join in on because of the highly idiosyncratic, improvisation-based styles of the Dead’s front line,” Dead scholar Blair Jackson wrote in the liner notes as per Rolling Stone.
