Legendary guitarist Jeff Beck sadly died on Tuesday at the age of 78. As honors pour in for one of the greatest to ever pick up an axe, outlets are also taking a look at past tributes shared while Beck was still alive.
During the pandemic, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio presided over a DJ series on SiriusXM’s Phish Radio from his Rubber Jungle home studio. One of the segments saw Trey talking about how influential Jeff Beck’s landmark 1975 solo album Blow By Blow was for him as a young guitarist.
“I was so obsessed with this album when I was starting to play guitar,” Anastasio said. “This, to me, is the great guitar album. For me, it’s the high water mark of guitar albums.”
Trey goes on to note that Blow By Blow was helmed by legendary Beatles producer George Martin and that the second song on the record was a cover of the Lennon/McCartney composition, “She’s A Woman.” “Super cool take on this song,” Anastasio said of Beck’s “She’s A Woman” and added, “I like Jeff Beck’s version better than The Beatles’ version.”
Lastly, Trey prefaces the song by saying, “The musicality, the sonic musicality, and the clearness of the guitar and the melodic choices, I’ve always believed, had a lot to do with joining forces with George Martin.”
