Brittney Spencer joined Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit once again on Thursday night for the band’s encore in Atlanta. Spencer, who opened the night with a set of her own, teamed with the group for covers of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” and The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” at The Tabernacle.

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit had tapped Brittney Spencer to record a studio version of the James Brown classic for their recently released Georgia Blue charity covers compilation LP benefiting nonprofit organizations Black Votes Matter, Fair Fight and Georgia STAND-UP. Spencer previously performed “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” live with the group at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium in October and this past Tuesday night in Savannah, Georgia.

Brittney Spencer first covered “Gimme Shelter” with Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit in Grand Rapids, Michigan on August 26, 2021. The singer-songwriter reprised her role in singing the part originally sung by Merry Clayton on The Stones’ 1969 original recording again on August 28 in Harrisburg, on September 20 in Detroit and then on October 8 in Memphis before versions at the aforementioned Nashville and Savannah shows.

Georgia Blue was also represented during Isbell and company’s main set last night with takes on R.E.M.’s “Driver 8” and Drivin’ N’ Cryin’s “Honeysuckle Blue.” The latter was led by 400 Unit guitarist Sadler Vaden. Last night’s 17-song main set also featured five tunes from the band’s 2020 LP, Ruunions, including “What’ve I Done To Help,” “Dreamsicle,” “Be Afraid,” “Only Children” and “Overseas.” Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit ended the frame with three of their most played songs as “Stockholm” led into “Flying Over Water” ahead of the set-closing “Cover Me Up.”
