Amanda Shires’ weekly livestream series I So Lounging: The Second Wave continued on Friday with her husband Jason Isbell and Peter Levin. The episode featured covers of songs by Bon Iver, Eric Clapton and Richard Buckner.
Shires intended for the episode’s theme to be songs with female names in the title. Her selection of Buckner’s “Ariel Ramirez” led to the fiddler learning that the song is named after a man, Argentine composer Ariel Ramírez. Despite that disqualifying fact, Shires led the trio through a cover of the song off Buckner’s 1998 album Since with Isbell on electric guitar and Levin on Fender Rhodes.

Isbell then sang lead on a cover of Bon Iver’s “Beth/Rest” off the 2011 self-titled Bon Iver album. The first attempt at “Beth/Rest” was abandoned but the trio successfully executed the second take.
The finale was a cover of “Layla” from Clapton’s 1970 Derek & The Dominos album, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs. Shires sang lead on the classic written by Clapton and Jim Gordan. Isbell switched to slide for the song’s signature coda. Watch the three covers in Episode 3 of I So Lounging: The Second Wave below:
