Drummer Janet Weiss has confirmed her departure from Sleater-Kinney. Weiss, who has been a member of the trio for the past 24 years and appears on their forthcoming The Center Won’t Hold album, announced the news on social media. Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker took to the band’s social media accounts to share a statement of their own.
“After intense deliberation and with heavy sadness, I have decided to leave Sleater-Kinney,” starts Weiss’ note. “The band is heading in a new direction and it is time for me to move on. I will never forget the heights we reached or the magnificent times Corin, Carrie and I shared.” Janet first appeared on the trio’s 1997 LP, Dig Me Out. On August 16, the group will release The Center Won’t Hold, which was produced by St. Vincent (Annie Clark) via Mom + Pop Music.

“We are saddened by Janet’s decision to leave Sleater-Kinney,” begins the note from the remaining members of the band. “It has been an incredible privilege to work with such a talented musician and drummer over the course of so many albums, including The Center Won’t Hold.” Sleater-Kinney has yet to announce a new drummer. They kick off a tour in support of the LP this October.
