Jackson Browne & Jorma Kaukonen Lead All-Star “The Capitol Sessions” Concert

Jackson Browne and Jorma Kaukonen led an all-star concert at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Friday. Dubbed “The Capitol Sessions: Songs from a Rock Palace That Impacted the World,” the show was a benefit for voter registration organization HeadCount.

The star-studded concert got under with Capitol Sessions musical director Larry Campbell and his wife and longtime collaborator Teresa Williams leading the way on the Grateful Dead’s “Samson & Delilah.” As an homage to the storied Capitol Theatre, the concert featured a number of songs by some of the venue’s legendary performers including the aforementioned Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Traffic, Mountain and The Rolling Stones among others.

The Rolling Stones were well represented by longtime Stones vocalist Lisa Fischer who first delivered The Chambers Brothers classic “Time Has Come Today” before Jackson Browne her on The Impressions’ “People Get Ready.” Additional early highlights included Amy Helm and Steely Dan touring guitarist Connor Kennedy covering John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery,” bandmates Marco Benevento and Karina Rykman on Leon Russell’s “Out In The Woods,” Larry Campbell singing lead on Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy” and Trey Anastasio Band saxophonist James Casey leading the way on the Charles Wright funk and soul classic “Express Yourself.”

Next, James Casey, Grahame Lesh, Eric Krasno, Marco Benevento, Amy Helm and others teamed up for a block of Grateful Dead tunes including “Shakedown Street,” “Deal” and “Brokedown Palace.” Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, vocalist Teresa Williams and guitarist Larry Campbell capped off the Dead segment with “Sugaree” before Campbell added on fiddle on Hot Tuna’s “Hesitation Blues” with Jorma. Teresa then helped Kaukonen out on classics from his Jefferson Airplane days “White Rabbit” and “Somebody To Love.”

Lisa Fischer then led the way on the Stones’ “Wild Horses” and “Gimme Shelter” before Jackson Browne closed out the main set with his stellar songs “Doctor My Eyes” and “Running On Empty.” Finally, the whole gang reconvened for a fitting encore of The Beatles’ With A Little Help From My Friends” to bring the star-studded benefit to a close.
