Jackie Greene Honors Tom Petty & Plays Grateful Dead Set At Birthday Show In San Francisco

By Jeffrey Greenblatt Nov 12, 2017 9:08 am PST

Last night The Warfield in San Francisco played host to Jackie Greene‘s annual hometown birthday show. The concert was filled with a slew of special guests, including Grateful Dead founding member Phil Lesh, and also included a portion of the night dedicated to honoring the late Tom Petty.

Greene began the night with New Orleans guitarist Anders Osborne. The recent touring buddies offered up a pair of songs acoustic, opening the night with “I Don’t Live In A Dream,” from the singer-songwriter’s 2008 release Giving Up The Ghost and “Tupelo” from his recent EP The Modern Lives, Vol. 1. Jackie’s backing band emerged next as they kicked off the electric portion of the night with a number of selections from his catalog – “Gone Wanderin’,” “I’m So Gone,” “Modern Lives” and “Back To The Bottom.” The band switched gears as they then dedicated the next portion of the show to the late Tom Petty.

Greene and his band mates worked their way through a selection of Petty tunes by kicking things off with “Runnin’ Down A Dream” from 1989’s Full Moon Fever. Greene stuck to material from Petty’s roots-rock albums next, serving up takes on a pair of tunes from 1991’s Into The Great Wide Open, namely its title track and “Learning To Fly,” while also dipping into 1994’s Wildflowers for “You Wreck Me” and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” from 1993’s Greatest Hits release. Greene & Co. closed out their set with more of his own material in the form of “Shaken,” “So Hard To Find My Way” and “Like A Ball & Chain.”

Greene’s ‘And Friends’ portion of the night saw the birthday boy joined by a number of familiar Bay Area faces as Phil and Grahame Lesh, Elliott Peck, Alex Koford and Stu Allen took to the stage with Anders Osborne returning too. The ad-hoc group spent the next portion of the night performing the music of the Grateful Dead. The seven-piece band opened things up with “Bertha,” and worked their way through takes on “Friend of the Devil,” “Althea,” “Scarlet Begonias,” “Sugaree,” “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower.” The night came to a close with “Sweet Somewhere Bound,” the title track from Jackie’s 2005 debut album.
