Hiss Golden Messenger Covers Grateful Dead’s ‘He’s Gone’
Hiss Golden Messenger‘s MC Taylor shared video featuring his cover of the Grateful Dead’s “He’s Gone” on Instagram yesterday. Taylor’s rendition came on the same day President Donald Trump’s term came to an end before the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter wrote “He’s Gone,” which was first performed live by the Grateful Dead on April 17, 1972. “He’s Gone” was regularly played by the band through their final shows in 1995. The song references the disappearance of Lenny Hart, one-time Grateful Dead manager and drummer Mickey Hart’s father, as per The Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics.
“How am I not gonna play this song today? I do take exception with this line: ‘He’s gone, and nothing’s gonna bring him back,'” Taylor wrote in a note accompanying the video. “It’s all too clear that that everything the so-called former President embodies, the cancerous cells present in our political system, will definitely come back if we’re not diligent. We’ve got our work. But today, we breathe.”
