Ever funky bassist George Porter Jr. today turns 69 years old. The New Orleans native best-known for his contributions to the groundbreaking funk group The Meters, Porter continues to lay down grooves in a number of projects. In honor of GPJ’s big day today, here’s a look back at a classic performance by The Meters from more than 40 years ago.
Back in 1974 The Meters were part of a taping for the long running PBS live concert program Soundstage. The Chicago-based series produced an episode featuring a number of New Orleans legends including Dr. John, Professor Longhair and Earl King. With Porter on bass, The Meters lineup at the time included guitarist Leo Nocentelli, keyboardist Art Neville, drummer Zigaboo Modeliste and percussionist Cyril Neville.
They backed Professor Longhair to start “The New Orleans Swamp” episode, playing such favorites as “Shake Rattle & Roll” and “Tipitina.” The Meters also supported King during his performance of such classics as “Mama & Papa” and “Lonely Lonely Nights.” Porter and The Meters then deliver “Look-Ka Py Py” and “Jungle Man.” Dr. John & The Night Trippers take over the stage for a few songs before the other performers and The Meters return to offer the “Big Chief” group finale.
