Today master guitarist Carlos Santana celebrates his 68th birthday. The famed musician was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Fame with his namesake band in 1998 and has been recognized for his influence on his fellow musicians throughout his storied career. Santana has performed with an almost countless array of the world’s most talented musicians and for his birthday today we’re once again examining a well-known guest appearance he made in 1993.

Earlier this year we spotlighted a performance of “Stella Blue” from the January 26, 1993 Grateful Dead concert which celebrated the Chinese New Year at the Oakland Coliseum Arena in Oakland, California. That night saw Santana guest on that song, as well as a number of others during the evening’s second set and encore. Footage -with upgraded audio -has surfaced of the entire Santana-assisted portion of the show.

Santana, who had frequented The Dead’s stage several times prior, emerged at the end of “Space” and sat-in on “The Other One” > “Stella Blue” > “Turn On Your Lovelight” to end the closing set and also played the “Gloria” encore. As “Stella Blue” began, guitarist Bob Weir taught Carlos the chords to the song before the latter delivered a gorgeous solo.
