Happy Birthday Bruce Hornsby: ‘Standing On The Moon’ At Gathering Of The Vibes 2012

By Scott Bernstein Nov 23, 2015 11:30 am PST

Keyboardist Bruce Hornsby was born in Williamsburg, Virginia on this date in 1954. Hornsby was a basketball phenom in his high school and college days, but luckily for us decided to focus on music and went on to have an illustrious career that continues today.

Bruce came to national prominence with his band The Range in the mid ’80s. Hornsby & The Range scored big hits with “The Way It Is,” “Mandolin Rain” and “The Valley Road.” When Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland died in 1990, the band called upon Hornsby to take his place. While Bruce wasn’t willing to join full-time, he came aboard as a temporary member before deciding to focus solely on his solo career in 1992. He has since gone on to write and perform music for a wide range of projects and collaborations including musicals and classical work.

Let’s celebrate Hornsby’s birthday by looking at his stirring performance on the Dead’s “Standing On The Moon” featuring GD guitarist Bob Weir and jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis from the 2012 Gathering Of The Vibes festival:
