Happy Birthday Bill Kreutzmann: Jamming With His Rooster Conspiracy

By Andy Kahn May 7, 2017 11:40 am PDT

Drummer Bill Kreutzmann was born on this date 71 years ago. Billy was a constant fixture behind the kit for the Grateful Dead from his days as a teenager in The Warlocks through their final shows in 1995. Getting set to soon reteam with his Rhythm Devils partner Mickey Hart for another Dead & Company tour, Billy maintains a busy performance schedule as he continues to explore diverse projects and participate in new collaborations.

This birthday edition of Sunday Cinema focuses on the recently debuted musical project known as Bill Kreutzmann’s Roster Conspiracy. Debuted in January, the collective features the drummer alongside bassist Reed Mathis, guitarist Eric Krasno and keyboardist Todd Stoops.

Kreutzmann had the musicians over as part of a party he was hosting in Hawaii and eventually they took over the garage to jam. Three videos from the jam sessions, each running about 30 minutes, have surfaced thanks to rogeronkauai. Most of the time is spent improvising, but the quartet works actual songs in from time to time including “Sugaree,” “Fire On The Mountain” and “The Harder They Come.”
