A Gregg Allman Band live archival recording, Great As Ever: Live In Philadelphia ’86, will see the light of day on April 10 via Gregg Allman’s posthumous label Sawrite Records. The live LP is previewed by a rendition of “Don’t Want You No More.”
Captured on a frigid January night in Philadelphia at the intimate Chestnut Cabaret, Live In Philadelphia ’86 is the latest offering in a series of releases from Gregg Allman’s personal archives. 1986 saw the Gregg Allman Band — Dan Toler (guitar), Frankie Toler (drums), Bruce Waibel (bass), Tim Heding (keyboards) and Chaz Trippy (percussion) — in peak form following four years of hard touring.
That road warrior attitude was driven by Gregg’s love of live performance. Read a quote from the legendary rocker below.
“When I walk on a stage, I know the crowd has to come to have a good time and forget about their problems for a few hours. Our music makes them happy – they can stomp their feet, clap their hands, dance around and smile. I love to see that, because it makes me feel like I have a purpose – that’s why I play music.”
Press materials further detailed Live In Philadelphia ’86:
Among its many unforgettable standouts are a rousing take on “It’s Not My Cross to Bear” marked by Allman’s world-weary vocal and a fiery Dan Toler solo, a touching version of “Melissa” (dedicated by Gregg to his then-estranged ABB bandmate Dickey Betts), and a stellar performance of “Queen of Hearts,” Allman’s lament from his 1973 debut solo album, Laid Back.
The set also includes an early performance of what would become Allman’s greatest solo hit, “I’m No Angel,” along with the aforementioned “Don’t Want You No More.” The latter was originally released by Spencer Davis Group. The Allman Brothers Band put their signature instrumental spin on the number and selected it as the opener on their 1969 self-titled debut album.
