Keyboardist Scott Guberman and drummer Greg Anton teamed up to record a pair of songs with lyrics by Grateful Dead wordsmith Robert Hunter. The tunes will arrive as a limited-edition 12-inch vinyl dubbed The Collector’s Series on Friday, June 12 through Telefunken Elektro Records.

Anton and Guberman — both renowned musicians in the Grateful Dead universe — met a few years back when Guberman moved to the Bay Area. With an affinity for Robert Hunter’s lyrics, Guberman reached out to Anton who has co-written 33 songs with Hunter. Anton still had a couple of unfinished tunes he and Bob had worked on together and after bringing them to Scott, The Anton/Guberman Project was born.

The Side A song, “Just Because,” was destined for a Michael Mann play that never made it to the stage. The B-Side song, “Whisky’s Sweeter Than Milk,” was originally written for John Lee Hooker but the blues legend was unable to record it before his death in 2001. For both songs, Guberman and Anton enlisted the help of a crack cadre of Bay Area musicians including guitarists Stu Allen and Mark Karan, bassist Robin Sylvester and vocalist Stephanie Salva. The group recorded at the Prairie Sun Recording facility with producer Mooka Rennick.

To put a cherry on top of the stellar musicianship, Scott and Greg sought out Telefunken Records — an extension of Telefunken Microphones, renowned for producing the world’s highest-quality audio products — to provide the best listening experience possible. “The music is so crystal clear, it literally jumps off the record,” Telefunken CEO Toni Fishman said in a statement.
