Greensky Bluegrass Welcomes Lyle Brewer In New Haven
By Nate Todd May 23, 2021 • 9:22 am PDT
Greensky Bluegrass concluded their two-night run at New Haven, Connecticut’s Westville Music Bowl on Saturday. The quintet welcomed Neighbor guitarist Lyle Brewer for a pair of songs in the second set as well as the encore.
Greensky Bluegrass — mandolinist Paul Hoffman, guitarist Dave Bruzza, banjoist Michael Bont, dobro player Anders Beck and bassist Mike Devol — kicked the concert off with the staple “The Four” followed by a cover of the Fleetwood Mac classic “The Chain.” The band’s rendition of the Benny Burle Galloway-penned “Train Junkie” followed. The classics “Tuesday Letter” and “Demons” came next ahead of “Merely Avoiding.” The favorite “Windshield” then prefaced the set-closing segment, a pair of covers beginning with the Keith Alison and Mark Lindsay composed “Freeborn Man” and wrapping up with frequent Greensky collaborator Cris Jacobs’ “Bone Digger.”

The second set got underway with “Who Is Frederico?” GSBG then welcomed Brewer, who provided some Fender Telecaster stylings on “Lose My Way” and Joshua Davis’s “Dustbowl Overtures.” Greensky then went it alone on The Stanley Brothers’ classic “How Mountain Girls Can Love” followed by “Against The Days” and more Stanleys with “Clinch Mountain Backstep.” The classic staple “Old Barns” followed ahead of The New Basement Tapes’ “When I Get My Hands On You.” The Hoffman/Beck collaboration “Don’t Lie” would close out the second frame. Brewer once again joined Greensky Bluegrass for the encore, a rendition of Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” — last time played on September 25, 2019 for a gap of 62 shows, as per Phantasy Tour — to bring the evening to a close.
