Greensky Bluegrass and special guest keyboardist Holly Bowling honored the late Jeff Austin on Friday, the third anniversary of the Yonder Mountain String Band co-founder’s passing. Bowling and GSBG performed YMSB’s “Keep On Going” during the first set of their concert at Pier 17 in New York City.

Friday’s show began a two-night stand at the New York City venue featuring Holly augmenting Greensky Bluegrass for both concerts. GSBG dobroist Anders Beck addressed the crowd following the opening “Past My Prime”/”New & Improved” segment on Friday. “Hey, three years ago today we lost a dear friend of ours, his name was Jeff Austin and he was a mad man of a musician,” Beck said. “We’re going to play one of his tunes because we miss the guy a lot.”

Anders added, “remember to hug your friends, everybody” and dedicated “Keep On Going” to Jeff. Yonder debuted the Jeff Austin-penned song in 2000 with more than 200 additional versions following before Austin parted ways with the group in 2014. Greensky first played “Keep On Going” on June 29, 2019 just days after Jeff’s death. The quintet covered the tune two weeks later in West Virginia and then at last year’s Telluride Bluegrass Festival with Sam Bush on fiddle.

Greensky and their guest went on to focus on material from Stress Dreams over the course of the weekend. Bowling contributed to the latest GSBG studio album which came out in January. The six musicians also played plenty of classics including “Windshield,” “Past My Prime,” “Kerosene,” “Jaywalking” and “Don’t Lie” in NYC.
