Michigan jamgrass act Greensky Bluegrass continued Winter Tour at Marathon Music Works in Nashville on Saturday night. Greensky will return to the area this June for a set at Bonnaroo and last night paid honor to the event’s headliner, U2.
The five-piece moved back and forth between originals and covers during their Music City performance on Saturday. GSBG opened with “Worried About The Weather” from 2014’s If Sorrows Swim and “Miss September” from the recently released Shouted, Written Down And Quoted. Later in the set Greensky treated fans to a beloved cover of Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved,” followed it up with “Steam Powered Aeroplane” by John Hartford and their own “Windshield.”
When Greensky took the stage for the second set the original version of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” was playing over the p.a. Paul Hoffman led the band in picking up where the recording left off, but GSBG didn’t finish the Marley song. Hoffman’s “Jay Walking” came next ahead of the band’s beloved rendition of “Handle With Care” by Traveling Wilburys. A take on Bill Monroe’s “I’m Working On A Building” was followed by recent original “Run Or Die” and the always fun “For Sure, Uh Huh.” Last night’s second set came to a close with a well-jammed “Don’t Lie” featuring a cover of “Breathe” by Pink Floyd within. Greensky Bluegrass dedicated the “Where The Streets Have No Name” encore to Bonnaroo ’17 headliners U2, who originally wrote and recorded the big ’80s hit off The Joshua Tree.
GSBG Winter Tour continues tonight at Newport Music Hall in Columbus.
