Green Leaf Rustlers Welcome Neal Casal & Ross James At Sweetwater Music Hall
The Green Leaf Rustlers played the second of three shows in a row on Wednesday night at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California. Wednesday’s concert saw the band joined by Terrapin Family Band guitarist Ross James for the duration of the evening as well as Chris Robinson Brotherhood guitarist Neal Casal for portions of both sets.
Green Leaf Rustlers is fronted by Chris Robinson and also features drummer John Molo, bassist Pete Sears, guitarist Greg Loiacono and multi-instrumentalist Barry Sless. Loiacono was due to sit out the run with The Mother Hips on the road, but Greg did perform at the run opener on Tuesday since The Hips’ show that evening was cancelled.
Robinson & Co. act as a live jukebox of sorts with a focus on songs from both the classic rock and outlaw country realms. Green Leaf Rustlers opened Wednesday’s performance with Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35.” Other selections included Merle Haggard’s “The Bottle Let Me Down” and Hank Snow’s “Millers Cave.” Chris’s CRB band mate Neal Casal emerged in the middle of the set for “Give Back The Key To My Heart” and stayed out for the rest of the set: the New Riders’ “Last Lonely Eagle,” The Stones’ “Dead Flowers” and “Johnny B. Goode” by Chuck Berry.
The Green Leaf Rustlers went back to the Dylan repertoire to begin Wednesday’s second set with “Odds & Ends.” Neal Casal came back out after “White Line Fever” for a run of “Only Daddy That’ll Walk The Line,” “One Hundred Years” and “Hickory Wind.” Later in the night the band ended the frame with “Bertha” by the Grateful Dead and then returned for an encore of “At The Crossroads” by Doug Sahm and the Sir Douglas Quintet. Green Leaf Rustlers conclude the run at Sweetwater on Thursday featuring special guest Isaiah Mitchell.
