This Friday (May 26), a soundtrack for Amir Bar-Lev’s Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip will be issued on the same day the film will be released theatrically in New York City and Santa Monica ahead of its Amazon Prime Video premiere on June 2. One of the previously unreleased live tracks from the set has been unveiled on the Grateful Dead’s Soundcloud page.

The first disc of the Long Strange Trip soundtrack features a previously-unreleased version of “Dark Star” from the Grateful Dead’s early show on February 14, 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York City. Listen to the wild, exploratory “Dark Star” ahead of the soundtrack’s release:

Bar-Lev co-produced the soundtrack with Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux. Two versions of the Long Strange Trip soundtrack will be issued on CD. The first is a 2-CD set that will also be shared on digital and streaming services, while the second is an expanded version that will be available exclusively from Amazon as a 3-CD set and via Amazon’s streaming service. Then, later this summer, highlights from the 2-CD set will be issued on vinyl as will full audio from the Amazon exclusive version as a 6-LP collection, limited to 2,500 copies.

“All in all, this is unlike any other Grateful Dead release we’ve ever produced-just as the film is unlike any other Grateful Dead audiovisual document ever made. Then again, it’s simply unlike any other music documentary ever made, which is appropriate considering that there’s no band like the Grateful Dead,” said Lemieux in a statement. “This is music from the time before selfies, when things were more fun and commercial free,” added Bar-Lev. “It’s just right for these troubled times and I’m honored to be a tiny part of getting it out there.”
