Grateful Dead Share ‘Terrapin Station’ & ‘Playing In The Band’ From New Box Set

The Grateful Dead will release a new box set July 1978: The Complete Recordings featuring 12 CDs and five complete shows on May 13. Today, the Wall Street Journal has premiered a pair of lengthy tracks from the box set, which is currently available for pre-order.

All five shows that are collected in the box set were taped by Betty Cantor-Jackson and are the first official release from the long-lost “Betty Boards” that were recently returned to the band’s vault. Included within are recordings of the Grateful Dead’s visits to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City (7/1/78), St. Paul Civic Center in St. Paul (7/3/78), Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha (7/5/78) and the band’s debut at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado (7/7/78 and 7/8/78). Jeffrey Norman newly mastered Betty’s tapes for inclusion in July 1978: The Complete Recordings.

The Dead’s performance at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on July 1, 1978 came as part of Willie Nelson’s Fourth Of July Picnic. Jerry Garcia & Co. played one long set which included blistering versions of both “Terrapin Station” and “Playing In The Band” which you can stream below:

The set is limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies and features original artwork by esteemed cartoonist Paul Pope (D.C. and Marvel comics) and in-depth liner notes written by Nick Meriwether (Grateful Dead Archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz), as well as a producer’s note from producer David Lemieux. The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC via Dead.net on release day. A 3-CD set containing the Grateful Dead’s July 8th, 1978 performance is also due out May 13.
