The Grateful Dead shared pro-shot video of “Playing In The Band” as part of their All The Years Live videos series. The footage comes from GD’s June 9, 1991 concert at Buckeye Lake Music Center in Hebron, Ohio.
The “Playing In The Band” from Buckeye was played in the third slot of the second set sandwiched between “Crazy Fingers” and “He’s Gone” in an almost fully segued set, as per JerryGarcia.com. While it’s not a monster “Playin,” at just over nine minutes, it still gives the Dead plenty of time to take it out, as GD archivist David Lemieux attests to in his notes accompanying the video.
“From the short-lived two keyboard version of the Grateful Dead featuring Vince [Welnick] and Bruce [Hornsby], ‘Playing In The Band’ always allowed the band to do some deep exploration,” Lemieux wrote. “Summer 1991 featured some of the best shows of the Dead’s final half-decade of touring, and Buckeye was no exception to this excellence.”
