Recent high-profile concert tour cancellations by the likes of Post Malone, Zayn, Meghan Trainor and Pussycat Dolls were the focus of a segment on CBS Mornings. Singer-songwriter Andy Frasco spoke to CBS and shared his thoughts about the challenges facing touring artists and how so-called “blue dot fever” could impact the live music industry.
The term “blue dot fever” refers to seat maps for outlets like Ticketmaster showing unsold tickets to upcoming concerts, which are represented by blue dots on the ticketing platform. The phrase first appeared in a Page Six article quoting an unnamed “music insider” who said, “Seems that Post Malone came down with a serious case of blue dot fever … And it’s contagious.”
Post Malone scaled back his upcoming stadium tour with Jelly Roll, postponing its start by several weeks. The CBS segment on “blue dot fever” explored the greater impact of Malone’s and other recent tour cancellations on live music.
“It feels like we have to be more creative now to even get shows,” Frasco told CBS reporter Ash-har Quraishi when asked about current touring challenges he and his band The U.N. faces.
“These bigger artists are now going to go into the smaller capacity rooms, 500, 2,000, 4,000 people rooms,” Frasco further explained. “And it’s going to destroy the middle-class musicians because that’s their bread and butter of touring.”
