Grateful Dead Shares ‘Not Fade Away’ From New Year’s Eve 1978
The latest installment in the Grateful Dead’s All The Years Live video series is another clip from Closing Of Winterland. The newly shared video features the band’s 19-minute performance of “Not Fade Away” from their concert on New Year’s Eve in 1978.
The show on December 31, 1978 was the final event held at the San Fransico venue the Dead played at over 50 times. Here’s archivist David Lemieux’s assessment of the “NFA” at the Winterland:
Another gem from the classic Closing Of Winterland show, this rendition of “Not Fade Away” is long, powerful, and fun, filled with terrific solos, special guests, and inspired playing, despite the very late hour of the performance. Followed by another rocker, “Around and Around,” the Dead would leave enough gas in the tank to later play a third set that featured “Dark Star,” “St. Stephen,” and much more.
