It was just a few weeks ago that details emerged about the eighth installment of the Grateful Dead’s Dave’s Picks series of archival releases, but we already know what the ninth installment will consist of thanks to an announcement in the 2013 Grateful Dead Almanac. Dave’s Picks Volume 9 will feature the only Grateful Dead show to take place in the state of Montana -May 14, 1974.

The Dead’s May 14, 1974 performance went down at the Adams Field House in Missoula during the “Wall Of Sound” era in which the band toured with a massive and innovative sound system. In fact, the Missoula show was just the third the Dead played using the “Wall of Sound.” Among the highlights is a 22+ minute “Playing In The Band,” a “Weather Report Suite” > “Dark Star” for the ages and just the second performance of “Scarlet Begonias.”

Dave Pick’s Volume 9 isn’t due until early 2014. The band revealed details of the release as extra incentive to purchase a Dave’s Picks 2014 subscription package. In the announcement of the subscription package, Lemieux reveals we “can plan on something excellent from the 1969-1971 era, likely something you’ve never heard” as another of the four Dave’s Picks releases planned next year.
