Grace Potter continued her winter tour featuring support from Brittney Spencer last night at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, North Carolina. Potter welcomed Spencer to the stage late in the night for a cover of Bob Dylan‘s “I Shall Be Released.”
Brittney Spencer started her time opening the latest leg of Potter’s Mother Road tour back on January 18 at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The singer-songwriters teamed on “I Shall Be Released” at The Cap for the first time and last since Monday’s concert. Each successive show has featured Spencer joining Grace and her band at some point during the evening.

Bob Dylan originally recorded “I Shall Be Released” backed by The Band during the Basement Tapes sessions in 1967. However it was British musician Boz Burrell who released the song first on May 3, 1968. A few months later, The Band included a version of “I Shall Be Released” on their July 1968 debut album, Music From Big Pink. Dylan and The Band’s Basement Tapes take officially came out in 1991 as part of The Bootleg Series Volumes 1 – 3 box set.
Grace Potter and her band — drummer Jordan West, bassist Kurtis Keber and guitarists Indya Bratton and Ricky Dover Jr. — delivered a career-spanning performance in Raleigh that featured a number of songs from Mother Road. One of the songs off the 2023 LP, “All My Ghosts,” was played by request for a youngster in the audience.
Potter began the final portion of the night by performing “Stars” from the 2012 Grace Potter & The Nocturnals record, The Lion The Beast The Beat. The end of the “Stars” gave way to “I Shall Be Released” with Potter bringing out Brittney Spencer soon after starting the Bob Dylan-penned classic. Spencer provided powerful harmony vocals while both Bratton and Dover Jr. took impressive solos.
