Watch Grace Potter Channel Tina Turner With ‘Proud Mary’ Cover Live At Sonic Forest
Ike and Tina Turner scored a Grammy Award in 1972 for their version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic.
Grace Potter led her band through The Ike and Tina Turner Revue’s rendition of the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic “Proud Mary” in a newly shared video. The tribute to Tina Turner was filmed live at Sonic Forest in Potter’s home state of Vermont.
Penned by John Fogerty, Creedence Clearwater Revival originally released “Proud Mary” on their sophomore studio album, 1969’s Bayou Country. The single peaked at the No. 2 slot on the Billboard Hot 100. Ike & Tina Turner put out their version in 1971, which hit the No. 4 slot on the Billboard Hot 100 and scored the pair a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Group in 1972.
Grace Potter starts her version of “Proud Mary” by explaining how her uncle Morgan bought her a silver Tina Turner wig when she was four years old. Potter noted that people would smile at her when she wore that wig and she realized “even though the hills of Vermont might be nice and quiet, sometimes [she] doesn’t like it nice and quiet.” Grace accompanied by guitarists Indya Bratton and Nick Bockrath, drummer Jordan West and bassist Kurtis Keber then powers through the song in the same style as Tina Turner. Sadly, Tina Turner died at age 83 on May 24, 2023.
