Gov’t Mule Welcomes Many Guests To Begin Beacon Run

By Scott Bernstein Dec 31, 2015 8:23 am PST

On Wednesday began a three-show New Year’s Run with the first of two performances at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Warren Haynes & Co. gave a taste of what’s to come on New Year’s Eve by previewing the group’s guest-heavy “The New Year’s Jam” performance at the end of last night’s second set.

Gov’t Mule focused on originals for a ten-song first set that included such classics as “Soulshine,” “Blind Man In The Dark” and “Rocking Horse.” Haynes and his band opened the second set with “Unring The Bell,” “Endless Parade” and “Bad Little Doggie.” The guest spot action started following “I’ll Be The One” with a take on the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree” featuring former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Jack Pearson as well as axemen Steve Kimock and Jimmy Vivino and keyboardist Chuck Leavell. Pearson, Leavell and Kimock stuck around for “I Shall Be Released” which saw Letterman bassist Will Lee replace Mule’s Jorgen Carlsson. The set ended with a triumphant take on the ABB gem “Dreams” with Lee, Kimock, Vivino, Leavell and Pearson. For the encore, Mule dusted off a cover of “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder starring drummer Carmine Appice and Jimmy Vivino. Gov’t Mule returns to the Beacon tonight for a three-set show filled with Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band and The Band covers.
