On Friday night Gov’t Mule concluded their brief Australian tour with an appearance at the 2018 edition of the Byron Bay Bluesfest for the second day in row. The Southern rock act moved over to the Jambayla Stage at the Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm where they were joined by a handful of guests during their 14-song set.
Warren Haynes & Co. got their night going with the old-school classic “Blind Man In The Dark” from their 1998 sophomore album Dose. “Bad Little Doggie” and “About To Rage” came ahead of a pair of songs from The Beatles as Mule segued from “She Said, She Said” into “Tomorrow Never Knows.” Two songs later the four-piece band welcomed out their first guest of the night as Jeff Young, who plays keyboards in Jackson Browne’s touring band, lent a hand on a cover of Billy Cobham’s “Stratus” from the jazz-fusion artist’s 1973 release Spectrum.
Later in the set Lukas Nelson, percussuonist Tato Melgar of Promise Of The Real and Ivan Neville, who’s band Dumpstaphunk took the stage prior to Gov’t Mule’s set, emerged as the augmented act offered up a take on Neil Young’s “Rocking In The Free World.” The guest parade didn’t end there as Jackson Browne took to the stage next along with his bandmate Young as he led the ensemble through a take of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Melissa.” Gov’t Mule closed out their appearance at the Byron Bay Bluesfest with “Rocking Horse” and “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground.”
