Gov’t Mule Welcomes Adam, Bobby & Denise Deitch At Red Rocks

Gov’t Mule made their return to the scenic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on Sunday night, where they teamed up with Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch and his parents, Bobby Deitch and Denise Deitch at multiple parts of the concert. The band also paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock by performing three songs played at the iconic 1969 festival.
Mule used both parts of “Traveling Tune” to bookend their two sets of Red Rocks. A cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Dreams” followed the first part of “Traveling Tune” and led into a series of staples including “Thorazine Shuffle,” “Stone Cold Rage” and “Beautifully Broken” over the course of the remainder of the first set.

When the quartet returned to the stage for the second set, they were joined by the Deitches on percussion for a cover of Babatunde Olatunji’s “Jingo.” The song was popularized by Santana and was performed during their Woodstock set. Next came a rendition of “Eyesight To The Blind,” a tune The Who played at Woodstock. Then, Mule worked “Game Face” into the ABB’s “Mountain Jam” and back again before bringing Adam, Bobby and Denise back on percussion for “Kind Of Bird.”
Last night’s second set rolled on with the Mule classics “Blind Man In The Dark” and “Bring On The Music” as well as the set closing second part of “Traveling Tune.” Guitarist Warren Haynes started to solo at the beginning of the encore and then told the crowd, “It was 50 years ago today” before the band lit into Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” Hendrix performed “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” as part of the final set at Woodstock, which indeed took place 50 years to the day, or rather morning, of Sunday night’s concert.
