Gov’t Mule played their first show since May 1 at College Street Music Hall in New Haven, Connecticut on Saturday. The concert launching Mule’s multi-city New Year’s run to end their 30th anniversary year saw the quartet debuting a Radiohead medley.

Gov’t Mule — guitarist/vocalist Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis and bassist Kevin Scott — began the concert with the sole song performed, “Same As It Ever Was,” from the band’s most recent studio album, Peace… Like A River.

A rendition of Steppenwolf’s “Don’t Step on the Grass, Sam” followed. A staple cover for Mule in the early days, the track appearing on Steppenwolf’s 1968 album The Second has become a rarity of late for Gov’t Mule. The first frame also saw Mule touching on 2021’s Heavy Load Blues with their medley of “Snatch It Back and Hold It” > “Hold It Back” and “Snatch It Back and Hold It.”

Warren and company also took it back to their 1995 self-titled debut album with “Rocking Horse” and “Trane.” The first frame came to a close with Tower of Power’s “What Is Hip?”

The second set commenced with Gov’t Mule unveiling their Radiohead medley. The segment consisted of the groundbreaking British band’s “Paranoid Android” sandwiched between “Karma Police.” The sequence came to a close with a dub version of “Karma Police.” Both tracks appear on Radiohead’s landmark 1997 LP, OK Computer.

The second set included cuts, “Thorns of Life” and “Stone Cold Rage,” off Mule’s 2017 album, Revolution Come, Revolution Go. The band dipped most from their 2017 LP in New Haven, also performing “Pressure Under Fire” in the first set.

Additionally, set two saw a cover from the Ann Peebles catalog, “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home,” and came to a close with a pairing of Frank Zappa’s “Pygmy Twylyte” and original “Blind Man in the Dark.” Mule returned for a raucous encore of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs.”
