Gov’t Mule Presents The New Year’s Jam At Beacon Theatre

By Scott Bernstein Jan 1, 2016 7:29 am PST

Warren Haynes and Gov’t Mule spent New Year’s Eve honoring the Grateful Dead, The Band and The Allman Brothers Band at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. “The New Year’s Jam” featured the music of all three bands, who famously teamed up for “The Summer Jam” at Watkins Glen in 1973, played by Mule with plenty of guests.

The first set was “Grateful Mule,” aka Gov’t Mule’s version of the Grateful Dead. Warren, drummer Matt Abts, bassist Lincoln Schleifer, keyboardist Danny Louis, guitarist Steve Kimock and vocalists Machan Taylor and Elaine Caswell presented the capacity crowd with the “Watkins Glen Jam” followed by nine Grateful Dead classics. Most were debuts for Mule including “Bird Song,” “Tennessee Jed,” “Here Comes Sunshine,” “Loose Lucy” and “China Cat Sunflower.”

For the second set, Haynes, Abts, Louis, bassist Jorgen Carlsson and guitarist Larry Campbell paired up as “The Mule” in tribute to The Band. Warren and Co. picked from among Band covers Mule has performed in the past such as “The Shape I’m In” and “Up On Cripple Creek” along with debuts including “Stage Fright,” “Chest Fever” and “Across The Great Divide.” The final set found Warren, Matt, Danny, Jorgen, keyboardist Chuck Leavell, guitarist Jack Pearson and drummers Paul Riddle and Shawn Pelton team up as “The AllMule Brothers” to honor the Haynes, Pearson and Leavell’s old band, the Allmans.

Following a countdown into 2016 and New Year’s celebration, “The AllMule Brothers” tore through one classic from the Allman Brothers’ live repertoire after another. “Wasted Words” led off after the countdown as part of a set that featured Mule debuts of “Southbound,” “Come And Go Blues,” “Trouble No More,” “Blue Sky,” “Jessica” and “Whipping Post.” Schleifer assisted on “One Way Out” and “Statesboro Blues” towards the middle of the third set. Gov’t Mule said farewell with a “Mountain Jam” encore featuring Kimock on guitar. Next up for the group is a show in Philadelphia on Saturday night.
