A four-show run through Florida for Gov’t Mule and Old Crow Medicine Show concluded on Tuesday night in Key West. Mule brought out OCMS members Ketch Secor, Mike Harris and Mason Via cover a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Loser” towards the middle of their headlining set at Coffee Butler Amphitheater.
“We’d like to do an experimentation of what we call Old Mule Medicine Crow,” Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes explained after bringing out Harris on electric guitar, Secor on fiddle and Via on mandolin. The seven musicians then began the Hunter/Garcia ballad the Grateful Dead first performed in February 1971 and Jerry recorded with Bill Kreutzmann for his 1972 debut solo album Garcia. Haynes and Ketch Secor shared vocal duties on a 10-minute “Loser” that included solos from Warren and all three OCMS members.

The final collaboration of the two acts time on the road together followed Secor and Harris joining Mule for “Lonesome Whistle Blues” on October 16 in Clearwater and both bands teaming for “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” in Apopka on October 15. Gov’t Mule went sans guests after “Loser” to take on Bob Marley’s “Lively Up Yourself,” Howlin’ Wolf’s “I Asked For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline),” Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Effigy” and Blind Willie Johnson’s “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground.”
Earlier in the night, Haynes and his bandmates kicked off their set with the traditional “Railroad Boy.” The four-piece then worked through beloved favorites “Rocking Horse” and “Soulshine” before offering a rendition of Charles Otis’ “Brother Bill (The Last Clean Shirt).” From there live staple originals “Beautifully Broken” and “Revolution Come, Revolution Go” led into the collaborative “Loser.”
