Gov’t Mule Welcomes Eric Gales At Florida Jam

After a five-month delay, the 2018 installment of Florida Jam finally took place this past weekend at Sunset Cove Amphitheater in Boca Raton, Florida. As reported, Gov’t Mule stepped in to headline the one-day fest when Dickey Betts unexpectedly canceled his appearance back in August. The bill featured sets from Eric Gales and The Elvin Bishop Band with Warren Haynes & Co. tapped to close out the evening’s festivities. The jam titans delivered a lengthy, tease-filled headlining set that saw them joined by Gales during the encore.

Mule got their evening going in the Sunshine State with “Hammer & Nails” from The Deep End, Volume 2. The quartet then dug in on their first jam-filled run of the night using “Mule” as the springboard. The band would drop Van Morrison’s “I’ve Been Working” and Bo Diddley’s “Who Do Love” in its midst before returning back to the track from their 1995 self-titled debut. “Slackjaw Jezebel” followed as they worked in teases of The Allman Brothers Band’s “One Way Out” and “Les Brers In A Minor” along with elements of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child.” The classic rock teases continued next in “Unring That Bell” as Gov’t Mule referenced songs by The Beatles, Grateful Dead and Bob Marley.

Later in the set, the four-piece covered Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Breakdown” in the middle of “Beautifully Broken.” “Kind Of Bird” from Haynes’ days in the Allmans would contain pieces of two familiar ABB songs, “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” and “Mountain Jam” as well as another Hendrix tune, “The Wind Cries Mary.” Gov’t Mule’s two-song encore opened up with Robert Johnson’s “Come On Into My Kitchen” with Gales emerging next. The blues guitarist would lend a hand on a take on Elmore James’ “Look On Yonder Wall.”

Earlier the evening both Haynes and Gales sat in with The Elvin Bishop Band for a take on Lionel Hampton’s “Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop.” Watch fan-shot video from Florida Jam 2018 captured by CHeeSeHeaDPRoDuCTioNS below:
