When Goose announced details of their new album, BIG MODERN!, set for release on No Coincidence Records on June 12, one of the biggest surprises was the inclusion of “Torero.” Debuted live by the band one year ago this week at their inaugural Viva El Gonzo event, “Torero” suddenly disappeared from the repertoire last June.

Thankfully, the song, with a title that translates to bullfighter” from Spanish, was just getting a fresh coat of paint. Goose recorded “Torero” for their third album in 14 months and today released the studio version.

“Torero” opens with a low synth drone and reverb-heavy drums before settling into a steady, pulsing groove driven by bassist Trevor Weekz. A muted guitar line adds tension as the arrangement gradually builds. Guitarist/vocalist Rick Mitarotonda layers in sharp, harmonic leads while keyboardist Peter Anspach's synth textures swell, pushing the track toward a cathartic chorus. The song unfolds patiently, balancing atmosphere and momentum, and ultimately gives way to a soaring, high-intensity peak.

BIG MODERN! marks Goose’s sixth studio album, following dual 2025 releases Everything Must Go and Chain Yer Dragon. Mitarotonda, Weekz, Anspach and drummer Cotter Ellis previously previewed the 15-track set with its lead single, “Good2B.”

Mitarotonda discussed the band’s intentions of creating an immersive album for today’s overstimulated, hyperconnected society with Rolling Stone, stating:

“As I see it, all these ideas we’ve been playing with are an absurdist reflection of the confusion of existing in today’s world. Over-stated guerrilla marketing campaign with zero context or direct connection to anything, video of a five-minute rant from an unhinged executive, showing up at an NBA game in ridiculous sweatsuits…The album is a dispatch from interesting times, without judgment or superiority. We’re all in it the same – the exhilarating, disorienting experience of constantly being so ‘connected’. The overstimulating, high-resolution world of content streaming directly into your brain, in real time, all the time. Synthetic, prepackaged human emotion on demand for your entertainment. The nightly doomscroll bliss. The relentless worship of the projection of an image of self to the world. Identity as a brand. Your FACE… on your FACE. Somehow, more becomes less. Something is lost, but we’re not totally sure what it is. It’s awesome, and it’s terrifying.”

Goose returns to Mexico this weekend for Viva El Gonzo 2026. Livestreams are available for nugs subscribers of Goose performances, along with sets by Cory Wong, My Morning Jacket and Jim James.
