George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville & Eric Krasno Among Widespread Panic Guests In Mexico


The eighth installment of Widespread Panic‘s Panic En La Playa destination event came to a close on Monday night at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Widespread Panic kicked off the night with a set filled with originals and went the all-cover route for a second set that included guest appearances from Eric Krasno, George Porter Jr. and Ivan Neville. The night ended with an encore featuring members of Bloodkin.

Widespread Panic opened the evening with pairings of “Chilly Water” and “Saint Ex” and “Disco” and “Pilgrims.” The sextet then went with “Goodpeople” ahead of “The Last Straw” and one of their newest songs, “Sundown Betty.” A double dose of “P”s – “Pigeons” and “Postcard” – concluded the all-original first set in Mexico last night.

John Bell led his mates through their sixth-ever cover of Tom Petty’s “Honey Bee” to kick off the final set of PELP Ocho. Next up was “Bastards In Bubbles,” a tune from Panic’s brute. side project with Vic Chesnutt that was played at a WSP show for the first time on New Year’s Eve. The sextet looked to the brute. repertoire once more for “Puppy Sleeps” before the guest parade began. Eric Krasno emerged to lend a hand on a cover of Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy.” Kraz also shredded through JJ Cale’s “Ride Me High” and stuck around as GPJ and Ivan Neville came out for Professor Longhair’s “Red Beans” and the Calvin Carter/Bobby Rush-penned “Bowlegged Woman.” Porter Jr. and Schools embarked on a bass duet while backed by Duane Trucks and Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz out of the “Bowlegged” jam. Duane and Sunny then locked in on the evening’s “Drums” segment ahead of a cover of Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West.”

Widespread Panic closed out the second set with their first “Don’t Be Denied” since 2017 and the fitting “Last Dance.” Bloodkin’s Daniel Hutchens and Eric Carter were on hand when the band returned for the encore. Hutchens and Carter led WSP through Daniel’s “Makes Sense To Me” Daniel and Eric’s and “End Of The Show.” Panic En La Playa Ocho ended with a guest-less rendition of “Action Man.”
