Last night, Gary Clark Jr. brought out fellow guitar greats Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks for a two-song sit-in in Cincinnati. The Tedeschi Trucks Band co-leaders joined Clark Jr. during his encore at The Andrew J. Brady Music Center.
While Gary Clark Jr. is devoting the bulk of his late summer to opening for The Black Keys, he fit a handful of headlining dates into his schedule. The Monday night concert in Cincinnati was the first of those shows.
Tedeschi Trucks Band had Monday night off from their Live In 25 Tour. Derek and Susan were in town ahead of the TTB’s Tuesday night gig at Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center.

Gary Clark Jr., Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks previously connected in 2014, when they shared a bill at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Trucks joined Clark Jr. and his band for “Don’t Owe You A Thang,” before Gary repaid the favor by guesting with the TTB on a cover of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “I Pity The Fool.”
Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi emerged with Gary Clark Jr. and his band at the start of their encore on Monday in Cincinnati. “Surprise!” Clark Jr. exclaimed as the pair took the stage. The collaboration began with a take on the Albert Collins-penned blues classic “If Trouble Was Money.” Tedeschi and Trucks each had a turn soloing as Clark Jr. put down his guitar to focus on vocal duties. King Zapata from Gary’s band also let the fretboard fireworks fly.
Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks hung out for the subsequent “Don’t Owe You A Thang.” Clark Jr. wrote the song and originally released the tune in 2011 on his The Bright Lights EP. The Austin native had his guitar in hand for the penultimate tune of the night, which was followed by a guest-less “Bright Lights” finale.
