Full Shows Audio: Steve Kimock & Friends Perform In Denver

Guitarist Steve Kimock hosted a pair of Steve Kimock & Friends shows at Cervantes’ Other Side in Denver on Friday and Saturday nights. The ensemble featured Dead & Company keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and audio of the pair of shows in Colorado has surfaced.

The other “friends” performing alongside Kimock included his son, John Kimock on drums and their KIMOCK band mates Leslie Mendelson on additional keys and vocals and Andy Hess on bass. Friday’s action began with longtime Kimock favorite “Tangled Hangers” followed by “Variation” which appears on the recently issued KIMOCK album Satellite City. A lengthy “There’s Going To Be Butter” anchored the opening set that closed out with “My Sisters & Brothers” and Zero’s “Anorexia (Is Not For Everyone).”

The first night’s second set opened with a pairing of “Well All Right” and “Philadelphia Mambo.” The Satellite City “Orson” came next, followed by a run of covers including Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody),” Little Milton’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” and Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker.” One additional cover, Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing,” was offered as the night’s performance-closing encore.

Saturday’s first set opened with “Friend Of The Sun,” the Satellite City opening track. The first half also saw an offering of the fellow album track “Mother’s Song,” a cover of Neil Young’s “Don’t Let It Bring You Down” and a sequence stringing together the Grateful Dead’s “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” with Elizabeth Cotten’s “Oh Babe, It Ain’t No Lie.”

The final set of the weekend began with the Satellite City title track, followed by a 24-minute jammed-out version of the Dead’s “Crazy Fingers.” Kimock staple “Five B4 Funk” and The Rolling Stones’ “Let It Bleed” were also selected in set two, as were the Jerry Garcia staples “Don’t Let Go” and “Waiting For A Miracle,” the latter of which was also included on the new LP. Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers To Cross” served as the evenings’ encore.
